If you are looking to save a substantial amount of money, do it yourself and get started today! Contractors often charge a steep premium to reface a kitchen but the work isn’t too difficult. If you can measure and have access to fairly standard tools, Outside The Box may just be your new best friend.

The first step of any DIY cabinet reface is to measure. We suggest that you start with a drawing of your cabinets. Simply draw out your cabinets and every opening (including double doors with no stile in between, single doors with a stile in between, drawer fronts and any special pieces like breadboards). Once you are finished with your quick drawing, you can start measuring. It is always important to have an order of operations that you stick with throughout. We suggest measuring left to right, top to bottom. It is important to start with the width and then the height of the openings.

The next step to a DIY cabinet reface would be to measure for ¼”plywood skins. Here at Outside The Box, we use a 1/4’” thick, plywood skin to cover the existing cabinets. Many refacing companies strictly use veneer but there are many problems with that. It does not last long and will begin to bubble and peel in a matter of no time whatsoever. Your plywood skins go on your existing cabinets so you will want to measure everything besides the openings you will have previously recorded. Maybe you just want new doors and plan on painting your cabinets. That works too and you can go ahead and skip this step
With doors and plywood skins measured, next you need to think of any trim pieces you may want/need. From crown moulding to corner and scribe, you must think of what you would like and measure accordingly. After the measuring process is complete, you can start to design your space. You will pick a wood species and door style, decide between paint vs. stain, and whether or not you want a custom glaze. Measuring for your DIY cabinet refacing project is just the first step but with Outside the Box, it is now easier than ever before.
